WIAA/Seattle Times state athletes of the week

Class 4A

Kyle McCartney, Edmonds-Woodway football: McCartney completed 11 of 15 passes for 208 yards and four touchdowns, and carried six times for 57 yards as the unbeaten, third-ranked Warriors beat Snohomish 37-13 in the first round of the state playoffs.

Kelly Tannhauser, Juanita girls swimming: Tannhauser, a sophomore, broke four school records at the state meet while placing third in the 100-yard freestyle and swimming on the runner-up 200 free relay and the third-place 200 free relay.

Class 3A

A.J. Carroll, Meadowdale football: The junior linebacker intercepted a pass on the Mavericks’ 1-yard line and recovered two fumbles in a 20-19 upset of eighth-ranked Evergreen in the first round of the state playoffs.

Kristin Barott, Hanford volleyball: Barott, a senior setter, had 29 assists and three blocks in the title match as the Falcons swept top-ranked Auburn Riverside 25-16, 25-22, 25-15 for their first state volleyball championship.

Class 2A

James Valdez, Othello football: Valdez ran for two touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, and had 90 yards on 19 carries in the Huskies’ 27-21 first-round playoff win over Colville.

Amelia Messegee, Centralia girls swimming: Messegee won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200 and 400 free relays to help the Tigers finish second to Sehome in the state meet.

Class 1A

Hakan Yagiz, Overlake boys soccer: Hagan, a sophomore forward, scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over University Prep for the district championship.

Terrika Weaver, Seattle Christian girls soccer: The freshman had two goals to help the Warriors beat Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls 3-0 in the state quarterfinals and advance to Friday’s semifinals.

Class 2B

Ryan Strandin, Bear Creek boys soccer: The Grizzlies freshman got his third hat trick of the season in a 6-0 state-quarterfinal win over North Sound Christian.

Mandy Powell, Darrington volleyball: Powell, a junior, led the Loggers to fifth place at the state tournament, the school’s highest finish in a girls sport. In a win over King’s West to get to the trophy round, she had 30 assists and eight aces in a three-game sweep.

Class 1B

Will Hoppes, Tri-Cities Prep football: Hoppes passed for 190 yards and ran for 154 in a 32-24 playoff win over Cusick, sending the Jaguars to the state quarterfinals.

Shelby Puckett, Tekoa-Oakesdale volleyball: Puckett, a junior co-captain, led the Nighthawks to the state championship with 55 kills, 16 blocks, five aces and 20 digs in four matches. In the title match against Garfield-Palouse, she had 17 kills and four blocks.

The WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week are selected by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and The Seattle Times from nominations by athletic directors around the state.
